Meet Beatrice: Making a Little Bear with a Story
A companion for Bertie
Handmade teddy bears, Bertie and Beatrice, dressed in matching navy and blue outfits, sitting together on a shelf. Their soft, natural fabrics and carefully stitched details reflect the warmth and charm of handmade toys.
After making Bertie, I began to think that perhaps he needed a companion.
A devoted wife.
Someone kind and gentle, with her own character and story, who might one day sit beside him on a shelf, or perhaps find her way into the arms of a child.
And so, I decided to make Beatrice.
She would be very similar to Bertie, sharing the same little bear-like features and the same handmade beginnings. But I wanted her to have her own personality, too.
A gentle bear.
A thoughtful bear.
A little bear with a quiet sweetness of her own.
And, of course, she needed an outfit that would sit beautifully alongside Bertie's.
That was where the fun really began.
Choosing the fabrics
One of my favourite parts of making Beatrice was choosing the fabrics for her clothing.
I wanted her to look as though she belonged beside Bertie, so I spent time thinking about colours, textures and how her clothes would complement his little navy suit and orange-brown details.
For Beatrice, I chose a beautiful blue embroidered denim for her dress, with white cotton bloomers beneath. She would also have a matching jacket and hat, bringing the whole outfit together.
There is something particularly enjoyable about choosing fabrics for a handmade character.
You begin with an idea, perhaps a colour or a particular piece of material that catches your eye, and slowly you start to imagine what it might become.
A little dress.
A little hat.
A little bear with a personality beginning to emerge.
I loved watching those ideas come together for Beatrice.
A little bear with a gentle heart
I imagined Beatrice as a kind and gentle bear.
A beautiful companion for Bertie, and a little character who reflected something of the traditional values I hold dear.
There is a quiet beauty in the idea of companionship.
Two people, or in this case, two little bears, who belong together. Who share a home, a life and the ordinary moments that make a story meaningful.
I wanted Beatrice to carry that sense of warmth and gentleness.
Not because everything in life is always perfect, but because there is something precious about kindness, faithfulness and the care we show towards one another.
For me, the beauty of a traditional marriage is found in that commitment to love, support and companionship, with God at the heart of the home.
And perhaps that is a little of what I wanted to capture in Beatrice.
Not simply a bear dressed in pretty clothes, but a little character with a story of her own.
The joy of making
Making Beatrice was such an enjoyable, fun and creative experience.
I loved the process of choosing her fabrics, imagining how her clothing would look, and seeing her slowly take shape.
There is a particular pleasure in making something by hand when you have the freedom to play with ideas.
You can try a fabric, reconsider a colour, make a small adjustment and discover that something you hadn't initially planned becomes one of your favourite details.
I think that is part of the charm of handmade things.
They allow us to be involved in the process, rather than simply arriving at the finished result.
And with Beatrice, I especially enjoyed thinking about how her outfit would work alongside Bertie's.
I wanted them to look like a little pair.
Not identical, but connected.
Two characters with their own clothes, their own personalities and their own place in the story.
When Beatrice began to take shape
Like Bertie, Beatrice began with simple materials and a little patience.
Piece by piece, she slowly became the bear I had imagined.
There is something so satisfying about watching a handmade animal emerge from a collection of fabric pieces.
At the beginning, you see the materials.
Then you see the shape.
And eventually, you begin to see the character.
I always find that part of making rather special.
It is almost as though the little personality you imagined begins to find its way into the finished piece.
With Beatrice, it was especially lovely to see her blue embroidered dress, white bloomers, jacket and hat come together.
The details were simple, but together they gave her a look that felt just right.
And, of course, I couldn't help thinking about how she would look beside Bertie.
Two little bears, one story
Bertie and Beatrice sitting side by side.
When I look at Bertie and Beatrice together, I think about the quiet joy of making things that are intended to last.
They are only little bears, made from felt, thread and fabric.
But the making of them has become part of their story.
The time spent choosing materials.
The creative decisions.
The little adjustments along the way.
And the pleasure of seeing two handmade characters sitting together, each with their own personality.
Perhaps one day, they will become part of someone else's story, too.
Perhaps they will sit on a child's shelf, be included in imaginary adventures, or become a treasured companion at bedtime.
And perhaps, over time, they will become a little worn around the edges.
I hope so.
Because there is something lovely about the thought of handmade things being used, loved and remembered.
A little thought to finish
I think one of the beautiful things about making is that it encourages us to slow down and notice.
To take pleasure in small details.
To enjoy the work of our hands.
And to remember that something doesn't have to be grand or expensive to be meaningful.
Beatrice was made with care, creativity and a little imagination.
And now she has her place beside Bertie.
Two little bears.
A little story.
And a reminder that some of the loveliest things in life begin with something very simple.
A piece of fabric.
A little thread.
And the willingness to make something with love.
